1
English Translation
1
A man’s brother delivers him to death, and so does his father.
2
The father of sons does not remain, nor do his sons remain.
3
How many are remembered by their people—until they depart, and are forgotten.
4
When a man’s years consume him, his years destroy him in return.
5
It is as if his loved ones are already weeping over him.
6
As if people have risen saying: “Hurry, save him!”
7
They ask him, speak to him, move him, instruct him.
8
When they despair of him, they say: “Turn him over.”
9
Turn him, face him, stretch him out, and close his eyes.
10
Hasten him to his departure, hurry—do not delay him.
11
Lift him, wash him, shroud him, and embalm him.
12
When he is wrapped in shrouds, they say: “Carry him.”
13
Take him out, lay him upon the bier, and escort him.
14
When they finish praying for him, they say: “Bring him, bury him.”
15
And when they entrust him to the earth as a pledge, they leave him.
16
They leave him under layers of earth, burdened and covered.
17
They distance him, crush him, make him lonely and alone.
18
They bid him farewell, part from him, surrender him, and abandon him.
19
Then they turn away as if they had never known him.
20
As if his people had never once cared for what he was.
21
People build structures they will never live in.
22
They gather wealth they will never consume.
23
They chase dreams they will never reach.
24
Whoever does not make people his priority—they abandon him.
25
The dead depart to what they sent ahead—and they find it.
26
Life is pleasant for those whom people are pleased with.
27
Live as you wish—for whoever delights in the world, the world will harm him.
28
If a man does not honor people, they will not honor him.
29
Anyone people do not need—they belittle him.
30
And whoever people desire—they exalt him.
31
Whoever supports his brother with wealth is truly his brother.
32
When he looks at him, he sees what pleases him.
33
A man may be honored, yet his own sons may cast him away.
34
If people saw a prophet begging, they would not help him.
35
But if they coveted a dog’s food, they would eat it.
36
You will never see me begging with my mouth in my lifetime.
37
Only those of virtue are truly known by their virtue.
38
The best charity is that which is done without disgrace.
39
As long as you do not need your companion, he remains your brother.
40
But if you need him for an hour, he will spit you from his mouth.
