تَطاوَلَ لَيلُكَ بِالأَثمَدِ
2
وَنامَ الخَلِيُّ وَلَم تَرقُدِ
3
وَباتَ وَباتَت لَهُ لَيلَةٌ
4
كَلَيلَةِ ذي العائِرِ الأَرمَدِ
5
وَذَلِكَ مِن نَبَإٍ جاءَني
6
وَخُبِّرتُهُ عَن أَبي الأَسوَدِ
7
وَلَو عَن نَثاً غَيرِهِ جاءَني
8
وَجُرحُ اللِسانِ كَجُرحِ اليَدِ
9
لَقُلتُ مِنَ القَولِ ما لا يَزالُ
10
يُؤثِرُ عَنّي يَدَ المُسنِدِ
11
بِأَيِّ عَلاقَتِنا تَرغَبونَ
12
أَعَن دَمِ عَمروٍ عَلى مَرثِدِ
13
فَإِن تَدفُنوا الداءَ لا نُخفِهِ
14
وَإِن تَبعَثوا الحَربَ لا نَقعُدِ
15
وَإن تَقتُلونا نُقَتِّلُكُم
16
وَإِن تَقصِدوا لِدَمٍ نَقصُدِ
17
مَتى عَهدُنا بِطِعانِ الكُماةِ
18
وَالحَمدِ وَالمَجدِ وَالسُؤدُدِ
19
وَبَنيِ القِبابِ وَمَلءِ الجِفانِ
20
وَالنارِ وَالحَطَبِ المُفأَدِ
21
وَأَعدَدتُ لِلحَربِ وَثّابَةً
22
جَوادَ المَحَثَّةِ وَالمِروَدِ
23
سَموحاً جَموحاً وَإِحضارُها
24
كَمَعمَعَةِ السَعَفِ الموقَدِ
25
وَمَشدودَةَ السَكِّ مَوضونَةٍ
26
تَضاءَلُ في الطَيِّ كَالمِبرَدِ
27
تَفيضُ عَلى المَرءِ أَردانُها
28
كَفَيضِ الأَتِيِّ عَلى الجَدجَدِ
29
وَمُطَّرِداً كَرِشاءِ الجَرورِ
30
مِن خُلُبِ النَخلَةِ الأَجرَدِ
31
وَذا شَطَبٍ غامِضاً كَلمُهُ
32
إِذا صابَ بِالعَظمِ لَم يَنأَدِ
English Translation

Your night grew long in Al-Athmad
2
While the carefree one slept — but you did not
3
And the night itself spent itself for him
4
Like the night of a sleepless man in pain
5
That was a tale that reached my ears
6
A story I heard from Abu al-Aswad
7
Had I been told by any other than him
8
For the wound of the tongue is like the wound of the hand
9
I’d have spoken words that no scribe would dare record
10
What bond do you seek with us?
11
Is it for the blood of ʿAmr upon Marthad?
12
If you bury the illness, we shall not hide it
13
And if you stir the war, we shall not sit idle
14
If you slay us, we shall slay you too
15
And if you pursue blood, we pursue it likewise
16
When have we ever failed in valor
17
Or in praise, glory, or honor?
18
We are builders of tents
19
And fillers of the bowls with food
20
Keepers of fire and glowing embers
21
I have readied for war a swift charger
22
Generous, fierce, tireless in the chase
23
Like palm-fronds blazing in fire
24
Tightly saddled, sleek
25
Folding under me like a file
26
Its robes spill over the rider’s sides
27
Like torrents over a dry riverbed
28
Racing straight, as strong as braided palm fibers
29
And a sword beside me

Dark-edged

That cleaves bone

Without faltering

تَطاوَلَ لَيلُكَ بِالأَثمَدِ
Your night grew long in Al-Athmad

وَنامَ الخَلِيُّ وَلَم تَرقُدِ
