بُحورُ دنياً وبُحورُ آخِــــــــرةْ

من رامَ منها الدُرر المستترةْ

فليجمع المــــعارف المنتثرةْ

وهذه منظومةٌ خفيفةْ

جمعـــــتُ فيها فِكَراً لـطيفةْ
13
جعلتُها نصيحةً للراكبِ
14
مرشدةً مستأجر المراكبِ

مَوسومةً بـ: بُلغة المَراسي

في فنِّ الانتقال بالتكاسي

واللهَ أدعو أن يَعم نفعُها

وأن يَشيع في الأنام ذِكرُها

قِف في مكانٍ ظاهرٍ للناسِ

يراه من مرَّ من التكاسي

ولتَقِفَن على الطريق الموصلِ
23
إلى المُرام لا على الذي يلي

وحاذِرِ الوُقوفَ عند اللفَّةِ

أو في خِضَم الطُرُق الملتفةِ
26
واجتنب المَخرج والمنحدرا
27
كذلك الجسر وما منه جرى

واختلَفوا فيما يَمُد الواقِفُ

على وُجوه كُلها مَعارِفُ

فقيل: إن المَدَّ للإبهامِ

مرفوعةً من غير ما إحجامِ

وقيل: بَل يُشيرُ بالسبابةْ

مصحوبةً بأختها الوَثَّابةْ

وقال قَومٌ بل يمد الكفَّ

فمن أبان كَفَّه لم يَخْفَ

وقررَ الحُذَّاقُ أمراً مُجمَعا:

أن لا يَمُدَّ المرءُ كفيه معا

فصلٌ في اختيار السائق

لا تَصحبنَّ سائقاً مُعَقَّلا
40
إن العِقالَ يقلبُ الرُّخْصَ غلا
41
وإن يكن فصاحبُ الوانيتِ

فإنه أسرع في التوقيتِ

وإن يكن مُديلها قديما
44
وجِسمُها مُخَدَّشاً عَديما

تُحَدِّث الرُّكابَ بالضجيجِ

تَعلو على تلبية الحجيجِ
47
ليست بها مقاعد وثيرةْ

وتشتكي من عِلل كثيرةْ

فكل ذاك يخفض الأسعارا

فاقبله إن كنت فتى مِغوارا

وإن تكن ذا نعمة وميسرة

أو علة ولا تطيق السندرة

فاختر بذوقٍ خير مركوب أتى

ولا تدعهم يخدعوك يا فتى

فلا تكن خِباً إذا ذئبٌ بدا

ولا تكن فضاً شحيحاً لَددا

وحبذا مِشواركم بالجمسِ

فغالباً صاحبُه ذو أُنسِ

واجتنِبِ المدخِّنَ الصَّفيقا

فإن في صحبتِه مَضيقا

يؤذيك بالدخان في الطريقِ

ويكثر الوقوفَ للترويقِ

وإن أردت منعه من ذاكَ

ضَجَّ ببُغضٍ قاصداً إيذاكَ

عليك بالصبر فكلُّ ساقطِ

لا بد في الناس له من لاقِطِ

وَوَلِّ ذا المَحرومَ ما تولى

فهذه الشَّوارعُ يا صاحبي

وَلَّادةٌ فاثبُت وأيِّد مَذهبي

فذاك قد يقلبُها نهايةْ

أُسكُت هُدِيتَ فالسكوتُ أَولى

وإن بقيتَ في الطريقِ حَولا

فكثرةُ الكلامِ تؤذي السائقَ

تجعله يرتكبُ البوائقَ

إلا إذا رأيته قد نعِسا

فنادِه مُلاطِفاً مستأنسا

فإنَّ مَبدا شَرَرِ الحوادثِ

مِن نَعسَةِ السائقِ والمُحادثِ

حتى إذا ما قاربَ الوُصولا

وخِلتَه في سَيره كَسولا

English Translation

Says the hopeful one from the coasts of Bahrain,
2
Usama ibn Mustafa al-Bahraini.

All praise be to Allah, the Great, the One,
4
Guide of His servants to the most upright path.
5
Followed by prayers and peace
6
Upon the Prophet, the exemplary leader.
7
And after that: knowledge is overflowing seas,
8
Seas of this world and seas of the Hereafter.
9
Whoever seeks from them the hidden pearls
10
Let him gather the scattered branches of knowledge.
11
This is a light poem,
12
In which I have gathered subtle ideas.
13
I made it advice for the passenger,
14
Guiding the renter of rides.
15
Entitled: “Reaching the Harbors,”
16
On the art of traveling by taxis.
17
I pray to Allah that its benefit spreads,
18
And that its mention becomes widespread among people.

Chapter: Stopping a Taxi
20
Stand in a place visible to people,
21
So passing taxis can see you.
22
Stand on the road that leads
23
To your destination, not the opposite way.
24
Beware of standing at a turn,
25
Or amid winding roads.
26
Avoid exits and slopes,
27
And bridges and what stems from them.

They differed on what the one standing should extend,
29
Opinions all recognized and known.

It was said: extend the thumb,
31
Raised confidently without hesitation.

It was said: rather point with the index finger,
33
Accompanied by its lively sister.

Some said: extend the palm,

Whoever shows his palm will not go unnoticed.

The experts agreed unanimously:

Do not extend both hands together.

Chapter: Choosing the Driver

Do not accompany a driver wearing a head-cord (‘iqāl),

For it may turn cheap fares expensive.

If possible, choose the pickup-truck driver,

For he is usually quicker with timing.

Even if its service is old,

And its body scratched and worn.

It speaks to passengers through noise,
46
Louder than a crowd’s chant.

Its seats are not luxurious,
48
And it suffers from many defects.

Yet all that lowers the price,

So accept it if you are daring.

But if you are a person of comfort and means,

Or ill and unable to endure roughness,

Then choose the best vehicle available,

And do not let them deceive you.

Do not be naïve when a wolf appears,

Nor harsh, miserly, and quarrelsome.

How excellent is a ride in a GMC,

For its driver is often friendly.

Avoid the chain-smoking driver,

For in his company there is discomfort.

He harms you with smoke on the road,

And frequently stops for a “smoke break.”

If you try to prevent him,

He grumbles resentfully, intending to annoy you.

Be patient, for every fallen thing

Will find someone to pick it up.

Do not rush to accept any price

Out of fear of missing out.

When a vehicle appears to you,

And pulls aside to carry you,

Let him state his price first,

Then negotiate afterward.

Keep your words brief,

A look and a gesture are enough.

Or an unsuitable place.

And kind words: “Goodbye.”

Chapter: Stopping a Taxi

قِف في مكانٍ ظاهرٍ للناسِ
Stand in a place visible to people,

يراه من مرَّ من التكاسي
So passing taxis can see you.
22
ولتَقِفَن على الطريق الموصلِ
Stand on the road that leads
23
إلى المُرام لا على الذي يلي
To your destination, not the opposite way.

وحاذِرِ الوُقوفَ عند اللفَّةِ
Beware of standing at a turn,

أو في خِضَم الطُرُق الملتفةِ
Or amid winding roads.

لا تَصحبنَّ سائقاً مُعَقَّلا

إن العِقالَ يقلبُ الرُّخْصَ غلا
For it may turn cheap fares expensive.

وإن يكن فصاحبُ الوانيتِ
If possible, choose the pickup-truck driver,

فإنه أسرع في التوقيتِ
For he is usually quicker with timing.

وإن يكن مُديلها قديما
Even if its service is old,

وجِسمُها مُخَدَّشاً عَديما

فإن في صحبتِه مَضيقا
For in his company there is discomfort.

يؤذيك بالدخان في الطريقِ
He harms you with smoke on the road,

ويكثر الوقوفَ للترويقِ
And frequently stops for a “smoke break.”

وإن أردت منعه من ذاكَ
If you try to prevent him,

ضَجَّ ببُغضٍ قاصداً إيذاكَ
He grumbles resentfully, intending to annoy you.

فصل في تحديد القيمة
Chapter: Setting the Fare

عليك بالصبر فكلُّ ساقطِ
Be patient, for every fallen thing

لا بد في الناس له من لاقِطِ
Will find someone to pick it up.

فلا تبادر بقَبول كلِّ ما
Do not rush to accept any price

يُعرَض من سِعرٍ مَخافةَ الظَّما

حتى إذا ما مَركبٌ بدا لكَ
When a vehicle appears to you,

وجانَبَ الطريق كي يُقِلكَ
And pulls aside to carry you,

ثم تقاصص معه فيما يلي
