1
English Translation
1
Two little birds in Hijaz,
2
settled upon a branch.
3
In a quiet, peaceful garden,
4
with no dew and no beauty.
5
While they were whispering together,
6
at dawn, upon the branch,
7
a breeze passed through their grove,
8
a wind traveling from Yemen.
9
It greeted them and said: “Two pearls
10
in a vessel unworthy of them!”
11
“I have seen around Sana’a,
12
and in the shade of Aden,
13
gardens as if they were
14
remnants of the kingdom of Dhi Yazan.
15
The grain there is like sugar,
16
and the water is honey and milk.
17
No bird has seen it,
18
nor heard of it without being enchanted.
19
Come, ride with me, let us reach it,
20
in just an hour’s time.”
21
One of them said to him,
22
and some birds are wise,
23
“O wind, you are a son of the road,
24
you have never known what home means.
25
Suppose Yemen were Heaven itself,
26
nothing equals one’s homeland.”
